Prohormones are converted into anabolic hormones by the body through the use of enzymes. They are promoted to build muscles, shed unwanted fat, increase sex drive, and intensify training levels, and a few other things.
Pro hormones can be classified into three general groupings. These are the testosterone boosting group, the andro group, and the 19-nor group. The testosterone boosting group stimulates the body to increase secretion of the male hormone through natural means. Some of its uses are to reduce body fat and build muscle. The tribulus terrestrus is the most popular product in this category.
Just like the testosterone boosting group, the andro group is converted by the body into natural hormone, testosterone included. Prohormones from the third group produces numerous anabolic compounds. Among these compounds is the androlone, one of the major ingredients of the popular anabolic steroid Deca-durabolin (nandrolone deconate).
Pro-hormones started gaining popularity in the mid 1990’s. Since then supplement manufacturers have been promoting their prohormone products to athletes to build muscles and strength and to increase or recover lost sexual drives among men.
Scientific studies on the effectiveness of these products have mix results. Some studies suggest some increase in testosterone or nandrolone levels. In other studies, no benefits are found at all.
